New Fugblog info

So I've decided to make the move to Tumblr (well I decided about a month ago OOPS) for ease of posting and social network linking and webbing my 2.0's. SO I won't be posting anything around these parts from now on.

Random flying motorcycle fighter doodles

I've had a game concept in my head for awhile, and while I don't think it's likely to ever happen, it's fun to design vehicles for it.

MANTOROK, THE MIND-FLAYER

(The title is a dual-reference to Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law and Eternal Darkness, yes)

It's been awhile since I've sat down and did a pen and paper doodle. The room I moved into is pretty small, so I've got my drawing table situated perpendicular next to my computer desk. Hopefully having it within arm's reach of where I watch cartoons for children will increase my productivity. (hahaha FALSE)

I wanted to do something loose and fun, so I decided to do a mass of tentacles and cloth and put a skull on it. (I can't tell if it's this monitor or what but the lines look kind of shitty. HP changed their scanner interface and I still haven't figured out the right settings)

Baby-tier vehicle concepts

Someone tried twisting my arm into applying for a concept art position recently, for a job where I would mostly be doing vehicles and landscapes. Of the things I'm most qualified to do concept design for, I would rank vehicles just above landscapes, and landscapes just above non-euclidean geometry defying definition in known language and art.

But I decided to give it a shot. I missed the boat on applying, but it gave me a push to try taking my first baby steps into the world of vehicle design, which I will now spit up here.

First draft thumbnails of an all-terrain scooter concept, loosely inspired by mining equipment used to excavate terrain, Vespa scooters, and amphibious, froggy shapes.

Second draft, after someone rightly pointed out that the scooters' chassis were all situated too closely to the ground for something that was supposed to be used on rocky, uneven terrain. I chose a couple of designs that I thought felt looked tough enough to handle terrain, represented the two most distinct chassis shapes, and came closest to mimicking the frog shape I wanted (Amazon horned frog and a red-eyed tree frog, respectively).

And a mostly final pass, with the design I decided I liked most, and a handful of color schemes.

It turned out okay, I guess. I never really got the design to pop like I wanted it to, and got so bogged down in particulars by the end that I had mostly lost the simplicity of the silhouette that I was going for. Here's a doodle of a tractorish vehicle, using strictly a hard brush.

North American Miner-Bot Love Association

Taking a break from commissions for a few to exercise my concepting muscles. About 2 and a half hours in Photoshop.

The Diver

Another commission, this time for the Diver from Jon Cairns' excellent comic Alpha Flag, which I trust anyone checking this blog probably has the good sense to already be reading. In case you haven't, do it now please.

This image came out a lot more pretentious than I was really intending, especially if you don't know the context.

SamusXRidley OTP

One of the most involved, trial-and-error pieces I've done in a long time. Tried a bunch of new techniques/a handful of new brushes and tools. Fun, and exhausting.

This one is kind of a secret free commission I sneaked in for a friend of mine. He kind of immediately pounced on it, but since he has the advantage of INSIDER CONNECTIONS I decided to secretly expand the list. Just, layers of Tom Clancy misdirection shit.

And since I've been wanting to do a piece of Samus fanart for awhile but for some reason never got around to it his request made an easy sell.

Samus WIP

WIP shot of the piece I'm currently working on. I think I'm addicted to the smudge tool now.

Fly, you fools

Couldn't sleep, so here's a doodle I did while streaming the mother's day image. Keep tryin', big guy.

Super belated Mother's Day stuff

Belated Mother's Day art that I've been streaming the past few days. I always have the hardest time coming up with an idea for a card or art that will actually mean something to the person I'm giving it to.

My mom has always taken a fancy to Egyptian art and symbolism. Also, cats (she has several tattoos, including a full shoulder-spanning Isis and a black cat sitting atop a vase on her leg). So once I figured out what to make for her, it was pretty easy to strip-mine for meaningful symbols and motifs. I added wings because why not, wings are cool, and fit vaguely within the subject matter.

Inaugural Livestream TacocaT

From the Livestream tonight. I've played around with streaming before, and I think I may have figured out a good configuration, so I'll probably try it again. It was a ton of fun any somehow I didn't completely lock up when people I didn't personally know started showing up. It even kept me on task longer. So yeah, probably doing it again sometime.

Bonbon unfinished

Well yesterday kind of sucked! A ton! So I decided instead of being productive I would do a rough of a character for a story I've been mulling over. I kind of recycled a design from an earlier story concept that I ended up scrapping.

Tunneler

It's been a bit. I've got a backlog of studies, but it's been so slapdash lately I haven't really been able to fit them into a normal update format. So, instead here's recent speedpaint I did to work myself out of a rut. Someone suggested awhile ago that switching up angles would help when I run into problems motivating myself to work, pretty sound advice and I've only just now started taking it.

Anyway, played a lot of Portal 2 last week. The game itself is a lot of fun, but the atmosphere in the single player is what's been bringing me back. So, I've had industrial decay on my mind a lot this past week.

MAKE LIFE RUE THE DAY IT THOUGHT IT COULD GIVE CAVE JOHNSON LEMONS

Quick doodle celebrating a disgusting lack of productivity this week.

Gun, boots, and jumpsuit, and dominant hand are all off model but iongivafuck.

I guess I've taken to signing 2am doodles now.

Ciro

Another commission, this time for NoxidAssylem.

A for-real blog post will be coming soon, once I get off my duff and scan some stuff.

Getting back on the horse after falling off these past few weeks.

Kick Girl

Finally finished this! A commission for Sef Joosten (who doesn't even have a website definitely has a website).

Sorry the posts have been slow to come lately. I got clobbered by school and, ironically, the celebratory commissions I opened up for the sixth month mark.

Eugh I need to learn to stop being so anal about these.

It sounded like a train

Truncated update this week. Spent most of my free art-time this week working on Madam Mime, and spent the rest kind of dicking around on non-committal stuff.

Also, bringing this update to you despite tornado sirens raging outside.

Alex Speedpaint

One more speedpaint tonight. I think I've settled on his name being Alex.

Warbot

Saw this video and some of the others on the channel and decided to give some of the techniques a try, including working under a time limit.

All told this was about an hour and a half speedpaint.

Madam Mime

First of the free batch commissions. For Saeed Tahbaz's character Madam Mime.

Welder

Quick warm-up doodle before I get some work done. For some reason I kind of like her (his?) boots.

Free Stuff CLOSED

It's week 26, which means this blog has reached the ripe old age of 6 months, and the half-way point of this self-improvement experiment. It's also the 288th month of my being alive!

To celebrate, I'm giving the gift of free commissions. Check out the commissions page for the basics, and send me an e-mail at edagley@indiana.edu with your request. The terms are the same, but free.

First come first serve. I'll probably do about 5 of them, or up until around mid-March, so if you've been on the fence about getting a commission, now might be a pretty good time to do it!

Aaaaand all slots are filled.
